Managing Infection Control Issues with First Multi-Site North American Installation of the ‘Alex Gold’ Instrument Management Software
Ottawa, Ontario – In an effort to limit the risk of spreading infections by enforcing CSA reprocessing guidelines to manage increasingly complex instrument inventories and to temper rising medical costs through improved efficiencies and increased productivity, a new healthcare instrument management and tracking software has been installed at The Ottawa Hospital. The results are greater assurance of instruments being reprocessed to the manufacturer’s specifications, more efficient, productive operating rooms, better instrument training and real time tracking for hospital staff and relevant information to facilitate better decision making in a “real time” environment for Management and staff.
The Ottawa Hospital, with its three campuses, is the first in Canada and in North America to implement a multi-facility system of Alex Gold. The new software identifies and tracks the status and location of surgical instrument sets and equipment throughout the three city hospital sites in real time. Alex Gold has also been implemented at the Edmonton, University Hospital of Alberta and at South Lake Regional Hospital in Newmarket Ontario, and more than 22 other hospitals throughout Canada have implemented various versions of the Alex software line.
“Implementation of the Alex Gold Instrument Management System was a key project for The Ottawa Hospital. Supporting approximately forty surgical suites across three separate sites, it is imperative that we know exactly where are instruments are in real time, that we have the right instruments available for elective and emergency procedures when there needed, and that our staff have a reference tool that supports adherence to processing standards. These are the obvious benefits of an Instrument Management System, however, there are further benefits that we have just begun to realize. Alex provides data that will help Sterile Processing departments understand their business better. Productivity analysis, workload measurement, and cost per case for sterile goods are just a few of the areas where we see significant opportunities for development in the future. The partnership that has developed between The Ottawa Hospital, Codman, and TGX Medical Systems has been truly collaborative.
We look forward to an ongoing relationship where we will assess new opportunities to meet business objectives using technology as the enabler. We all share a common objective to support quality patient care at the highest standard.” stated Lynne Trott, Director Logistical Services, The Ottawa Hospital.
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1,060 bed academic health sciences centre, affiliated with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the Regional Cancer Centre, and the Rehabilitation Centre. Its services are concentrated on 3 campuses: the Civic, General and Riverside. The surgery program is comprised of 5 departments and 15 divisions, including dental, general, neurological, orthopedic, plastic, thoracic, urology, vascular surgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, general ob/gyn, gynecologic oncology, urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery and anesthesia The Ottawa Hospital employees over 10,000 staff and physicians.
“We are very excited about the outcome of this partnership with The Ottawa Hospital and are anxious to see the positive impact that this will have on the daily operations” stated Michael Good, Chief Executive Officer, TGX Medical Systems.
Alex Gold software is a pre-loaded, web-based system that offers multi-site functionality to busy staff in operating rooms and sterile processing departments throughout the hospital environment. On-line instrument identification can save countless hours of educational training as more complex instruments are introduced, and new medical staff join the hospital. At the same time, Alex Gold is a quality tool demonstrating that CSA reprocessing guidelines are being enforced through properly identified, decontaminated and sterilized instruments that they can be “traced to a patient in real time”.
